Number Zero in Chinese

The word 零[líng] means zero.

The pronunciation of 零[líng] sounds like a bell ringing.

Therefore, I create a sentence based on the bell “ling” sound in order to introduce the vocabulary and sentence construction.

零零
[líng, líng, líng],

"Ring, ring, ring"

按门
[àn mén líng],

press the door bell,

门铃响不
[mén líng xiǎng bù tíng].

the doorbell rings non-stop.

[àn] /v. to press     [mén] /n. door

[líng] /n. bell     门铃[mén líng] /n. doorbell     [xiǎng] /v. to make a noise

[bù] / not     [tíng] /v. to stop

The sentence above has four features as follows:

  1. Both "zero" 零[líng] and "bell" 铃[líng] have the same pronunciations.
  2. Both "zero" 零[líng] and "bell" 铃[líng] are stemmed from the same phonetic root of "order" 令[lìng].
  3. Notice that 零[líng], 铃[líng], 停[tíng] have the same Final. They are in rhyme.
  4. 门铃[mén líng] is repeated in succession within the sentence creating a verbal ringing effect.

Four phrases to do with 零[líng]:

零容忍 [líng róng rěn] /zero tolerance

零互动 [líng hù dòng] /zero interaction

零自尊 [líng zì zūn] /zero self-esteem

零信心 [líng xìn xīn] /zero confidence
